Gertrude Stein was a teacher and mentor to many modern writers such as Ernest Hemingway.  Read excerpts from her work Tender Buttons to get a sense of her unique writing style.

 

Dadaism was an influential art movement with connections to modern literature.

 

Cubism was another art movement, practiced by Pablo Picasso, which broke images into geometric shapes.  Gertrude Stein mimicked Cubism in her writing.

 

Stream of Consciousness was a technique used by William Faulkner.  William James, older brother of Henry James, coined the term in the field of psychology--read what he said about it here.
